Each participant afterward then decides if they're going to steal an already-unwrapped gift from someone else or gamble on opening a still-wrapped gift from the pile. Participants draw numbers, and then participant number one selects a gift from the pile and unwraps it. The wrapped gifts are put in a pile anonymously so you don't know who brought what. The presents can range from funny to earnest to shitty on purpose. The White Elephant game requires each participant to bring a single wrapped gift. So, what exactly are these wild gift swaps? We'll break it down. Coworkers ( even the boss), brothers, sisters, father-in-laws, grandpas-anyone is a welcome addition to a game full of treachery and back-stabbing. If they decide to steal, then the game continues until someone decides to keep their gift.White Elephant, what a rush! The holidays are always heated, but this turns all that angst into something actually fun. If they choose not to steal and keep the gift they have, the game is over. When all the gifts have been opened, the person who drew #1 has the option to steal a gift (since they did not have any gifts to steal initially).At that point, they are out of the game, and the gift they're holding is theirs to keep. In one rule variation, each participant can only be stolen from three times.Personally, we're partial to choosing all the mysterious gifts left unopened, so that the whole stash is revealed sooner. ![]() You can steal another gift or choose from the pile. If your gift is stolen, you can't steal it right back.For example, if person #17's gift was stolen, and they steal from person #5, then person #5 cannot steal the gift that was taken from #17. A gift can also only be stolen once per turn. ![]() The host should keep a tally of each gift and announce once a gift is "dead" and can no longer be stolen.
